The Global Future of Work: Independents in the Workforce

Australians used to have a clear idea of how they’d work, where’d they work and who they’d work for. However thanks to shifting demographics, the widespread adoption of new technology, and changing businesses needs, there have never been more pathways to employment. While this brings more opportunity, it also can bring greater ambiguity and both employees and employers need to prepare for this new world of work.

More than a quarter of workers will be Generation X and almost half will be millennials, who value work-life integration, more flexible working arrangements and the time to work on personal pursuits.  The workforce will be equally influenced by the employees that leave the workforce, not just those who join.

Globally, the freelance economy is booming. In two years time its predicted that more than 40 per cent of the white collar workforce will be freelance.
